What is it about?

Second hip fracture increases the risk of death above that anticipated from aging, for both men and women.

Why is it important?

Ten percent of hip fracture survivors will have a second hip fracture. Prevention of second hip fracture could save lives.

Perspectives

Our findings change the rationale for secondary hip fracture prevention. Standard strategy was to reduce morbidity among women in the early post injury period. We found, however, that both women and men are at high risk of another hip fracture for at least a decade and that subsequent hip fractures lead to mortality above that anticipated from aging. Effective secondary prevention strategies will save lives among hip fracture survivors.
