What is it about?

This paper describes the functional knee phenotype concept in detail. It aims to introduce a classification for phenotyping the patient`s individual knee alignment.

Why is it important?

With the concept of functional knee phenotypes knee surgeons can now better characterise each individual knee in terms of alignment. Thereby a more profound understanding of the individual knee alignment is obtained. Using this concept one can choose the optimal alignment method, the optimal alignment target and finally the optimal knee prosthesis, whether off the shelf or customised.

Perspectives

The data on non.osteoarthritic knees need to be validated in patients with OA. Hence, it is necessary to investigate big datasets for a better understanding of alignment in OA patients.
