What is it about?

This case reports describes 2 cases where the anteromedial meniscus root was injured due to malposition of an ACL reconstruction tibial tunnel.

Why is it important?

This is important because it demonstrates that malposition of the tibial tunnel during ACL reconstruction can cause serious consequences. For these 2 cases, it resulted in injury to the medial meniscus root which resulted in meniscal extrusion and development of osteoarthritis.

Perspectives

To date, we have described an iatrogenic injury due to cruciate ligament reconstruction tunnel reaming for all 4 meniscal root attachments. It is important for surgeons to recognize where they are drilling the tunnels so they do not cause inadvertent injury to the meniscal root attachments. Failure to recognize injury this could lead to development of arthritis in these patients.
