Why is it important?

Biomarkers have an advantage over chemical analysis in that they can demonstrate whether or not an organism has been meaningfully exposed. For some classes of persistent organic chemicals, such as the organochlorines, current detection limits are as low as parts per trillion. Thus, these man-made chemicals can be detected in almost all samples, but the physiological significance is rarely known. This chapter deals with various biomarkers which correspond to the adaptation mechanisms developed by animals in response to contaminants in their environment, and biomarkers that reveal biological damage resulting from contaminant stressors
