What is it about?
The first retrofit of such a building has been carried out in Armenia. This paper describes the design of the isolation system and the individual bearings and presents data on the properties of the bearings and the damping rubber developed for their manufacture. The severe winter weather at the site meant that particular attention had to be paid to the low temperature crystallization resistance of the rubber compound.

Why is it important?
Proposed seismic isolation technology gives the possibility to retrofit existing buildings without moving people from the building (without interruption of the use of the building)
Perspectives
This work can be broadly used in seismic prone countries where the risk of destruction of existing buildings is very high.
