What is it about?

This is a survey of the state of the use and research on the role of the history and philosophy of science (HPS) for astronomy education. It lists general resources in astronomy education, in the history of astronomy, and rationales for the use of HPS in science teaching and astronomy in particular. It also presents three cases to illustrate the role of HPS in astronomy teaching: the development of Kepler’s laws, the discovery of Neptune, and Pluto's status as a planet.

Why is it important?

Astronomy education is a young but growing field of research. This is the first survey on the use and research on the role of the history and philosophy of science (HPS) for astronomy education. It identifies historical and continuing research questions in the literature. It provides a survey of relevant references and resources for teachers, science education researchers, and HPS scholars.
