What is it about?
This book revolves around three questions - What does the particular French version of secularism (laicité) mean in political, cultural and legal terms ? - Why are there radically different understandings of laicité? - How have conflicts over laicité been expressed in the past 100 years?

Why is it important?
Conceptually, the book proposes a simple basis to understand French secularism in its multiple meanings. It offers a concise overview of the main historical development of laicité with a focus on recent years. It is the first systematic analysis that attempts to understand the structures and dynamics that govern the politicisation of religion and secularism.
Perspectives
Oddly enough, I chose to write this book in German. Non-German speaking readers may find some of the main ideas in the following article: (2017) 'Exclusionary Secularism: The Front National and the Reinvention of Laïcité', Modern and Contemporary France 25(3): 249-263.
