Water Policy in Chile

What is it about?

This book offers a detailed examination of the main sources of Chile’s water, its principle consumers, the gap between supply and demand, hydrological droughts, and future projected impacts of climate change. It also describes, analyzes and evaluates the performance of water policies, laws and institutions and the reasoning behind policy reform. The socio-economic setting, especially demographic growth and distribution and relative economic importance of sectors and regions in relation to demand and supply conditions are presented. The final section, drawing from the significant analysis and perspectives offered by all contributors, presents a global assessment of Chile’s water policy and its challenges to face increasing water scarcity.

Why is it important?

The field of water resources is interdisciplinary in nature, covering hydrological, economic, institutional, legal, environmental, social and political aspects. This diversification has led, in many cases, to partial treatment of water issues, or incomplete analysis of the various challenges at stake. This contributed book offers a self-contained interdisciplinary overview of water policy in Chile.
