What is it about?

Oiling activities lead to constant spillages, which pollute mangrove forests. Creation of right of way passage for pipeline lead to deforestation. Establishment of booth camps for oil workers lead to further loss of mangroves. Disturbance regime created by anthropogenic activities destabilize mangrove forest and lead to the entry of invasive nypa palms.

Why is it important?

Mangrove species, which are the native species are dying off, and are being replaced by foreign nypa palms. The loss of mangroves is also leading to the loss of their ecosystem services. The study is thus significant because it will help to provide data on mangrove loss to conservationist. Fire wood is a product of mangrove stem and is used for cooking, it is also sold to derive income by indigenous people.

Perspectives

This article is important especially to the global community because there is a dearth of current information on causes of mangrove loss in this region. This study will provide information on mangrove monitoring and conservation in this area.
