What is it about?

This paper presents the effectiveness of vacuum preloading in accelerating the consolidation with prefabricated vertical drains (PVD) by comparing with the corresponding results without vacuum preloading. Laboratory tests involving vacuum pressure and surcharge load induced consolidation were carried out under oedometer conditions. The effects of the magnitude and distribution of vacuum pressure on reconstituted Tunis soft soil are examined through average excess pore pressure and consolidation settlement. This experimental study was preceded by an analytical study of Tunis soft soil improved by vacuum consolidation combined with surcharge load.
