What is it about?

This chapter explores the life of a female religious leader who has become one of the highly regarded spiritual leaders in some parts of Oromia region of Ethiopia. Through her biography, I show how females like her subvert the highly patriarchal religious field which otherwise is dominated by male religious leaders and authorities.

Why is it important?

It is important because it introduces additional perspectives on the role and position of women. Here women are presented as providers of religious services and influential actors as opposed to the depiction that they are mostly on the receiving end of services provided by male dominated religious institutions.

Perspectives

I hope readers will get to appreciate the role of women in religions in Ethiopia and also learn more about the life of one of the most active and engaged spiritual leaders who is doing important works in her community.
