What is it about?
Gunshots are notoriously hard to record, yet many computer games (and movies) need a variety of gunshot sounds for their sound design. Some of the properties of the pressure wave generated by a gunshot can be represented using physical models. We used those models for digitally synthesising gunshot sounds and tested the resulting artificial sounds together with real recordings made in a shooting range on people who regularly play games. The artificial sounds were rated by these subjects as being of comparable quality to real recordings.

Why is it important?
It is possible using the method we propose to generate artificial gunshot sounds of existing and imaginary types of firearms for use in games. This has the potential to reduce the time and resource investment by game studios in game design.
Perspectives
Every study needs a baseline condition. The baseline in this study was a set of real gunshot recordings we had to make in an actual shooting range. Since gunshot sounds can get quite loud and also generate shockwaves, a special recording setup had to be used. This was one of the strangest recording scenarios I had in my research career as a researcher working in audio signal processing.
