What is it about?

This case study follows a French learner of German as she discusses her progress in this language on a class blog. Our analysis looks at how relationships with other German speakers (including teachers) and with the language itself influenced her progress. Attachment theory is used as an interpretive framework.

Why is it important?

This is, to our knowledge, the first article exploring the potential of attachment theory as a factor in language learning. It postulates that attachment, in this case, is not strictly linked to early childhood experience, but is situated.

Perspectives

Attachment theory could provide a useful framework for understanding many aspects of L2 learning, including indicating to teachers how they could capitalize on relationship issues in learning and teaching.
