What is it about?

Green Beans (also known as string beans and shi-so in Japanese) are vegetables that provide us with important vitamins and nutrients such as Vitamin K, Vitamin C, Vitamin A, manganese, and dietary fiber. Vitamin K helps stimulate blood clotting. Vitamin C boosts the immune system. vitamin A helps one see in the dark (night vision) and in trace amounts manganese is important for our metabolism. This activity provides and opportunity to grow green bean plants using various liquids.

Why is it important?

Students tackle with the problem: "Which bean plant will grow the best in t terms of height, appearance, etc. ? Three green beans will be planted separately. They will be taken care of in the same way, except for one difference. One will receive water, another will get a basic liquid, and the last one will get an acidic liquid. So which one will grow the best? This problem solving activity will enhance students creativity, while they will enjoy the activity.

Perspectives

One of our problem solving activities for STEM education. Students propose their hypothesis and carry out the experiments. To solve the problem, students learn the problem solving model. Hypothesis - plan - carrying out - discussion - presentation.
