What is it about?

The RoboCup Rescue competition was one of the first to recognize the need to be prepared for future disasters, because every minute counts when a disaster strikes and victims have to be found. The developments inside the RoboCup Rescue Simulation competition are compared with competitions organized by other communities, so we can suggest how we can further enforce the unique characteristics of the RoboCup competition.

Why is it important?

The RoboCup is a yearly competiton, where each year the task is made slightly harder, to stimulate the community to make progress. Because this is a gradual process (step-by-step), it is good to have papers that analyze the overall progress made and setup an agenda for the coming years.

Perspectives

This paper did the analysis for both Rescue Simulation competitions, which was a great preparation for the later '16 Years of RoboCup Rescue' article which made the link to the developments in RoboCup Rescue league. What I learned from this paper is the importance of the yearly Infrastructure competition, where many of the innovations inside RoboCup Simulation can be found.
