What is it about?

We all know that time and space are strongly linked. In this entry I explain that the notion of chronotope (chrono/time - topo/space) brought up by Mikahil Bakhtin is very useful to understand tourism. Through this distintive space-time people gives sense to daily activities. This notion offers a dialogical approach to tourism, which is conceived as a context rather than as an industry, and their rejection to the customary 'acculturative perspective' used in tourism-studies, as reflected by the notion of 'destination'.

Why is it important?

The notion of chronotope is useful to understand tourism because it always implies movement to another place (travel) during a 'qualitatively' different time (leisure). The combination of both dimensions makes tourism an interesting phenomenon to study. The entry shows that this notion is starting to be used in tourism studies. It helps to map out social complexity and to understand social and cultural rhythms.

Perspectives

I like very much this short entry because it has formalised the introduction of a notion that, quite likely, will produced interesting results within tourism studies. Reference work entry. First Online: 25 June 2016
