What is it about?
This article explains how artificial intelligence (AI) is being used to help people with disabilities in their daily lives. They have the potential to improve independence, quality of life, and access to healthcare. However, the article also highlights important ethical concerns. Many of these technologies collect sensitive personal data, such as voice patterns, movements, or even brain signals, raising questions about privacy and data protection. There is also a risk that AI systems may not work equally well for everyone, especially if they are designed using limited or biased data. This could lead to unfair outcomes or exclusion of certain groups. Another key issue is autonomy—ensuring that people remain in control of their own decisions. Some AI systems may unintentionally override user preferences or create dependence over time. The article also explores how these technologies may affect a person’s identity and sense of self. Overall, this work emphasizes that while AI-assisted technologies offer great benefits, they must be developed carefully, with strong ethical guidelines, user involvement, and a focus on fairness and inclusion.

Why is it important?
This work is important because AI-assisted technologies are rapidly becoming part of healthcare and daily life for people with disabilities, yet ethical frameworks are still developing. The article provides a timely and comprehensive analysis of key ethical challenges—including privacy, bias, autonomy, identity, and access—at a moment when these technologies are expanding globally. What makes this work unique is its integration of disability ethics, bioethics, and emerging AI governance perspectives to highlight that innovation alone is not enough. It argues that ethical design must be embedded from the beginning, ensuring that technologies empower users rather than unintentionally harm or exclude them. The findings can help guide researchers, developers, healthcare professionals, and policymakers in creating more inclusive, fair, and responsible AI systems. Ultimately, this work contributes to shaping a future where assistive technologies enhance dignity, independence, and social participation for all individuals.
Perspectives
Working on this article reinforced my belief that technological innovation must always be guided by ethical responsibility. While AI offers remarkable opportunities to improve the lives of people with disabilities, it also challenges us to rethink concepts such as autonomy, identity, and what it truly means to “assist” rather than control. What makes this topic particularly compelling to me is not only its clinical impact, but also its ethical depth. Much like the themes explored in horror science fiction films, AI forces us to confront fundamental questions about identity, autonomy, control, and what it means to remain human in the presence of intelligent machines. The difference, however, is that these are no longer fictional dilemmas—they are becoming real clinical and societal challenges. Personally, I found it especially important to highlight that people with disabilities should not be seen merely as end-users, but as active partners in designing these technologies. Their lived experiences are essential for ensuring that AI systems are meaningful, respectful, and inclusive. I hope this article encourages readers to look beyond the excitement of AI innovation and consider the human values at stake. More than anything, I hope it sparks thoughtful discussion about how we can build technologies that truly serve people—ethically, equitably, and with dignity.
