What is it about?
This study explores the innovative use of quantum gates—fundamental building blocks capable of constructing any quantum circuit—to develop specific rules for both deterministic and stochastic cellular automata (CA). By utilizing an evolutionary algorithm that evolves through mutations, we can finely tune the types and connections of quantum gates. Our main goal is to minimize the discrepancies between the outputs generated by our quantum circuits and the established CA rules. We thoroughly examine how variations in the number of gates and mutation rates influence the results. Our research benchmarks these methods against both stochastic and deterministic CA rules and opens a discussion on the potential advancements that quantum adaptations of CA might offer.
