What is it about?

This article explains and critiques the long evolution of thought of John Wheeler regarding the ultimate nature of physics and its relationship to human knowledge. Wheeler came to doubt the ability of the traditional, law-based approach to physics in light of the growing understanding of quantum behavior and sought to supplant it with an interdisciplinary approach to physical knowledge. In particular, he viewed quantum information as an essential part of physics.

Why is it important?

Wheeler's physical thought has been remarkably influential. Notable PhD students of Wheeler include Nobel Prize winners Richard Feynman, Kip Thorne and many other outstanding physicists of recent times.

Perspectives

Because of the great influence and breadth of Wheeler's ideas, it is very important to understand their evolution and relationship, as well as to consider them from a critical perspective.
