What is it about?
Interactions between academia and industry theme are getting more and more attention from scholars from different fields and policymakers due to benefits in terms of innovation, technology, development, and economic growth. Literature in this field provides evidence, practices, and several aspects of university-industry linkages worldwide. However, little is known about Africa, and knowledge about this phenomenon is still limited. This paper aims to provide a state-of-the-art of different incarnations of African university-industry linkages by analyzing literature and secondary data. First, we identified 31 African countries in The Global Innovation Index reports (from 2011 to 2018), which have an index on university-industry research collaboration. Then, we gathered literature on those countries by searching related keywords to university-industry linkages. Based on our findings, we build a general idea about this phenomenon in the African context, exposing realities and challenges and leading the way to new research streams for future studies.

Why is it important?
Understanding the nature of the relationship between the university and industry in the African context is essential for strategy formulation regarding innovation and economic growth. We identified several barriers, challenges, and frequent practices that could help stakeholders in the innovation ecosystem make strategic decisions.
Perspectives
Having a big picture of the phenomenon is necessary but not enough. Therefore, we identified research tracks for future investigations.
