What is it about?

The book is about how populism and international politics hang together. It examines whether countries' foreign policies change when so-called 'populist' actors like, for instance, Donald J. Trump assume power and what this means for transatlantic relations, Europe and the liberal world order.

Why is it important?

During recent years, more and more so-called populist leaders and parties (like Donald J. Trump, the French Front/Rassemblement National or the German Alternative für Deutschland) have gained in or even won national elections. Populists usually challenge the status quo, claiming that elites have ignored the people's will, and advocate for radical change. This is likely to also have an effect not only on domestic politics but also on individual countries foreign policies as well as the chances for international cooperation, including transatlantic cooperation, European integration and the liberal international order.
