Why is it important?
This article is important because it details an anatomic-based reconstruction for posterolateral knee structures. In the past, the posterolateral corner of the knee was known as the "dark side of the knee" because its anatomy was not well understood and reconstruction techniques were not successful. Recent anatomic-based reconstructions of the posterolateral corner of the knee have proven to be very successful and have significantly improved the treatment of these injuries.
Perspectives
This article provides an overview of over 15 years of research by our group and with our colleagues at the University of Oslo on this problem. We believe that there has been significant advancement in the treatment of posterolateral corner knee injuries over this timeframe. Thus, the posterolateral corner of the knee is now easily treated and is no longer considered the "dark side of the knee".
