What is it about?

A six stage approach to the analysis of spatial interaction in urban and regional systems is outlined in general terms and its application is illustrated by a systems analysis of three types of spatial interaction in the Amersfoort region of the Netherlands. The basic principles underlying the approach are the need to examine each variable in the data set as far as possible in isolation and the need to progress from an initial inductive analysis to a deductive analysis in which mathematical models are used to test explanatory hypotheses in relation to the data. The proposed framework can also be utilised as a starting point for the development of an operational modelling strategy for urban and regional planning purposes.
