Why is it important?
It is important if researchers in undergraduate math ed (RUME) want to know more about how the field came to be established.
Perspectives
Ed Dubinsky was very influential in founding the Mathematical Association of America's Special Interest Group on Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education (MAA SIG/RUME). He is also known for his establishment of Action, Process, Object, Schema Theory (APOS), although this is only lightly touched on in this article.
