Why is it important?

Friction controls energy efficiency and fuel economy in today's engineering challenges. A clear understanding of what friction is and how it arises is important first step to control it. Parasitic frictional loss also represents an untapped energy for us to use. Finding a way to reduce the parasitic energy loss improves energy efficiency, reduces carbon emission, and protects the environment.

Perspectives

The paper summarizes our effort in friction related research for the past 30 years. It includes a lot unpublished data to create a unified perspective on the nature of friction and how it can be used under various tribological situations.
