What is it about?

Personalised Ventilation enhances thermal comfort and IAQ in individual work spaces. It’s inherent energy performance becomes even better when integrated with other means of efficient secondary cooling. This paper describes a novel idea of integrating with a local fan-induced chilled beam air-conditioning system. Simulation findings show enhanced thermal comfort and IAQ whilst saving energy in a hot and humid climate.

Why is it important?

Well-being in the workplace is increasingly gaining prominence and this is a paradigm shift towards human-centric approach to the design, installation and operation of buildings and their various systems. Using the combination of energy and CFD simulation approaches, this paper investigates in detail the energy and IEQ performance of a Personalised Ventilation system integrated with a local fan-induced active chilled bean air-conditioning system in a hot and humid climate. In comparison with a conventional Variable Air Volume system, this novel system can save up to 16% and 42% energy at peak and part loads respectively, whilst achieving enhanced occupant thermal comfort and IAQ at all times.

Perspectives

The concepts of Personalised Ventilation system and chilled beam system have been around for some time. In a traditional activated chilled beam system, the conditioned outdoor air is used to induce the room air through the local chilled beams. In this paper, we deliver the conditioned outdoor air (ie the personalised ventilation air) directly to the occupant breathing zone and propose a local fan-induced chilled beam system that can be modularly operated. The novelty is about ensuring the supply of clean air at the breathing zone for ventilation purposes and exploring a different but energy efficient method of handling the additional cooling requirements. In the course of this study and in writing this paper with my graduate student (co-author), it was exciting to observe remarkable benefits of enhanced comfort and IAQ in the individual work spaces and system-level energy savings.
