This study suggests that experiencing a more demanding day than usual may slow processing speed the next day. Measuring workload across the entire day—not just at work—may help researchers better understand changes in cognitive performance. Non-work engagements like childcare can also be impactful.

Why is it important?
A demanding day may affect processing speed beyond the day itself, highlighting the importance of recovery between days. Looking at workload across the entire day—not just during work hours—may provide a more complete picture of factors that influence cognitive performance.
Perspectives
This is one of our earlier works completed as part of my dissertation capturing the subtle impact that high workload can have even into the next day. As with our other related papers, the hope was that objective evidence of the impact of high workload exposure would increase the perceived benefit of time for recovery, as well as give a better sense of what consequences of high workload objectively look like. I'm a big advocate of "rest breaks", "siestas", and "tea time."
