What is it about?

This study examines how Industry 5.0 technologies can improve the remanufacturing of lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles. Using the AHP-PROMETHEE multi-criteria decision-making method, it evaluates different technological enablers and identifies the Digital Product Passport, Digital Twin, and Internet of Everything as leading priorities. It pays particular attention to the Digital Battery Passport and its potential to improve battery traceability, lifecycle management, and decision-making throughout the remanufacturing process.

Why is it important?

As electric vehicle adoption grows, managing used batteries becomes increasingly important to reduce waste, conserve critical materials, and limit environmental impacts. Remanufacturing can extend battery life, but it requires reliable information about battery condition, composition, and history. This study identifies technologies that can support safer, more transparent, and more efficient remanufacturing. Its findings can help manufacturers, remanufacturing companies, and policymakers prioritize digital solutions that advance battery circularity and sustainable mobility.

Perspectives

Future research could validate these findings through industrial case studies and pilot projects, measuring how Digital Battery Passports, Digital Twins, and connected technologies affect remanufacturing costs, safety, recovery rates, and battery performance. Further work could investigate interoperability among manufacturers, recyclers, and remanufacturers, as well as the implementation challenges of data sharing and regulatory compliance. These developments could support scalable battery remanufacturing systems, extend battery lifespans, and strengthen circular business models for electric vehicle batteries.
