What is it about?
Performing a provocative test at the end of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is accepted as an important strategy to decrease post operative complications. Many surgeons perform Methylene blue or leave drains or Barium studies the next day after surgery. Our study shows that performing intraoperative endoscopy after RYGB has clear advantages in detecting leaks and to a less extent bleeding or stenosis. It allows the surgeon to make the necessary changes to the findings intraoperatively which is better than finding leaks on drain output or Barium study after surgery. In addition, if the leak test is negative it is safe to allow patients to have clear liquids once they are awake high negative predictive value of a negative intraoperative endoscopy.

Why is it important?
Intraoperative endosocpy can help decrease complications after RYGB.
