What is it about?

We describe a simple but highly efficient methods differentiating human microglia from embryonic or induced pluripotent stem cells. The microglia was self-assembled into retinal organoids with well position and function.

Why is it important?

As retina is a part of central nervous system (CNS), eyes are extention of brain. CNS consists of brain, spinal cord and retina. The surrounding microglia in CNS play important roles in exerting immune surveillance, immune defense, neuron toxicity, promoting synapse formation and synaptic pruning.

Perspectives

Efficient generation of human microglia is useful for studying microglial biology as well as disease mechanisms or therapeutic development in medicine.
