What is it about?

Corporate philanthropy in India is growing in parallel with a fast growing economy, a rise in the number of billionaires, and the introduction of legislation that makes spending on corporate social responsibility compulsory.Through analysis of historical and anthropological texts, we add credibility to the statement that ‘business philanthropy has a long and honorable history in India’.

Why is it important?

Indian philanthropy is under-represented in international academic journals. In small measure, we have sought to address this, by offering an overview of current thinking about corporate philanthropy in India. It is our hope that this paper contributes to the field of Indian and (more generally) non-Western philanthropy.
