What is it about?

In all connections, quantum mechanics rests upon nearly 100 years' old formal postulates. A new set of postulates is proposed, and essential elements of the quantum formalism are derived from this.

Why is it important?

It is very important to understand the basis for quantum theory, since it has very many applications. It is also important to be able to formulate this basis in a way that also can be communicated to outsiders.

Perspectives

The theory of this article has now been generalized and simplified. Apart from rather obvious postulates, the only essential condition in the finite-dimensional case is that there exist two complementary variables in the sense defined by Niels Bohr, in my terminolgy two different maximal accessible variables. The general theory is on arXiv: 2305.06727 [qant-ph] (2023),
