What is it about?

We propose a method to tag open-source project tasks with types of APIs. Empirical experiments with participants from the industry and academia found the tags (labels) helpful in identifying the skills one should have to solve the tasks.

Why is it important?

Open-source software projects need new contributors. Many new contributors give up joining projects because they fail in the first contributions. Finding a new task to start is challenging due to the difficulty in identifying whether or not the contributor has enough knowledge to complete the job successfully.

Perspectives

Employing several machine learning algorithms including BERT, the approach is promising and can be used to automatically label the issues.
