What is it about?
Simple method to determine the strength of rock in tension based on its strength in compression. During testing of rock samples, it is easy to test the sample for its compression strength, but harder to achieve that for tension. So this is a practical tool to estimate the strength ratio of rock in a variety of engineering construction projects.

Why is it important?
The importance lies from the fact that practitioners use equations to determine the ratio between the tensile strength and compressive strength of rock. However, this presents a very quantitative method of determining the ratio and is sub-classified based on the rock formation.

This database was established to organize the Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS) to Brazilian Disc Strength (BDS) ratio based on rock type. A new set of classification charts have been developed and will be useful for estimating material properties in the pre-feasibility stages of projects where little site-specific data is available. Overall, this new classification system will serve as a practical tool to estimate the strength ratio of rock in a variety of engineering construction projects.
