What is it about?

Food, water, land and energy are closely connected. Producing food requires land, water and energy; generating energy may consume water and land; and decisions about one resource can create shortages or environmental pressures elsewhere. Researchers describe these relationships as the “resource nexus”. We reviewed 84 previous studies to discover which parts of the world and which social and demographic changes this research has examined. We found substantial gaps. Research has concentrated particularly on population growth and economic development in East and South Asia. It has paid much less attention to population decline, migration, inequality, changing lifestyles and conflicts over resources. Some regions—including Central Asia, West Asia and Oceania—have also received comparatively little attention. Moreover, researchers have rarely examined how trade, migration and global supply chains connect resource use in one place with environmental and social consequences elsewhere. These omissions are important because resource problems do not arise from population numbers or physical shortages alone. They also reflect consumption, wealth, political power, cultural practices, conflict and differences between places. We conclude that research must pay more attention to geographical diversity and social change. Scientists, social scientists, humanities scholars, policymakers and affected communities need to work together if research is to produce practical, locally appropriate and equitable solutions.

Why is it important?

Governments increasingly recognize that they cannot manage food, water, land and energy separately. A policy intended to solve a problem in one sector can create difficulties in another. However, recognizing these connections is not enough. Researchers must also understand who controls resources, who benefits from them, who bears the environmental costs and how these relationships differ between places. This review is timely because demographic and environmental conditions are changing rapidly. Population growth is slowing globally, increasing numbers of countries face population decline, climate change is contributing to displacement, and conflicts over land, water and energy are becoming more consequential. Yet much resource research still concentrates on population growth and economic development while overlooking migration, demographic contraction, conflict and changing consumption. Our study is distinctive because it evaluates not only what resource-nexus research has studied, but also what (and where) it has neglected. It exposes a geographical imbalance in the evidence and shows how an excessive focus on technical models can exclude the social, cultural and political circumstances that determine whether policies work. For researchers, our systematic review identifies important opportunities for new empirical and comparative work. For policymakers and practitioners, it warns against applying standardized solutions to places with very different populations, institutions and resource pressures. For general readers, it explains why scarcity is rarely a purely natural or technical problem. People can experience very different levels of resource security within the same country or city, because access depends on income, infrastructure, political influence and social position. The wider message is that effective resource governance must connect environmental systems with the realities of human lives. Without that connection, technically sophisticated research can still produce incomplete diagnoses and inequitable policies.

Perspectives

My research occupiezs the space where population, place and institutional change meet. Beginning with employment and regional development in Japan, I became increasingly interested in what happens when societies and infrastructures built for growth encounter long-term demographic contraction. That interest later extended to biodiversity, food systems and resource consumption (See Uchida et al, 2025, Biodiversity Change under Human Depopulation in Japan, Nature Sustainability). This review is important to me because it places those concerns within a much broader field. Research into food, water, land and energy has expanded rapidly, but it has often concentrated on modelling physical systems. Such work is valuable, yet resources do not exist outside society. Their production, distribution and consumption reflect geography, history, culture, political power and demographic change. As a geographer and Japan specialist, I am particularly struck by the field’s uneven geography. Research has concentrated on certain regions and problems while overlooking others. Population decline is already reshaping Japan and spreading internationally, but research into its impacts remains marginal. Our paper also expresses my conviction that the social sciences and humanities are essential to environmental research. Technical analysis can show how resource systems interact, but it cannot by itself explain how power, values, institutions and everyday behaviour shape those interactions. Neither can it determine what constitutes a fair outcome or whose knowledge should guide decisions. This connects directly with my wider research. My work on shrinking regions, biodiversity and consumption repeatedly shows that demographic change does not produce uniform or automatic outcomes. What happens depends on where change occurs, how institutions respond and whether affected communities participate in shaping that response. Our paper’s central contribution is therefore to put people and places back into resource research. If we want research to support genuine sustainability, we must understand environmental systems as lived and unequal realities, and not simply as technical and scientific relationships.
