What is it about?

This paper deals with the application of non-invasive and non-destructive EDXRF technique on a group of musical instruments made by Antonio Stradivari between 1669 and 1734. After a preliminary summary of the most interesting published results about the characterization of materials of Stradivari instruments, new spectral results are presented and discussed, providing novel interpretations and hypotheses of attribution.

Why is it important?

the data collected allowed to check if there are elemental similarities between finishing materials of violins made in different years by the same violin maker. It is worth noting that this is the first time that a comparative analysis of a wide number of ancient musical instruments made by the same violin maker for an extended period of time is accomplished.
