What is it about?

Energy biomass is one of the renewable energy sources. We have come up with a general model to correctly evaluate the competitiveness of energy biomass. We have incorporated both the supply side of the biomass use (biomass competes with conventional agricultural productions) and the demand side (biomass competing with classical, fossil fuels).

Why is it important?

While previous studies have looked only at one of the sides of the evaluation, we have provided a systemic, complex view on biomass use evaluation. On a case study of the Czech Republic, we have also shown that with the current rates of return of conventional crops, the price of biomass would have to be three times higher. On the other hand, in order to be competitive as a substitute for coal for local space heating, the price of biomass would have to be close to zero.
