What is it about?
Carambola is a very important fruit crop of the world. The propagation by sexual seeds lead to genetic variations in this crop and hence a reliable vegetative propagation is necessary. The tissue culture procedures for sweet carambola is detailed in this paper. Sweet carambola can be propagated by nodal explants from seedlings cultured on Murashige and Skoog medium containing growth-promoting agents. The best combination was 2.0 mg/l benzylaminopurine and 0.2 mg/l naphthylacetic acid.

Why is it important?
Sweet carambola varieties are rather rare and the newly identified lines need to be propagated with no genetic changes. Sexual propagation fails to produce true to type plants and hence a reliable in vitro propagation protocol is important.
