What is it about?

Research on the relationship between English language proficiency (ELP) standards and academic content standards is an area of significant importance in that correspondence between the standards expands the notion of content alignment to better serve the English language learner (ELL) population in a standard-based assessment system. The current study describes one approach to conducting ELP standards-to-standards correspondence studies based on trained reviewer judgments. By drawing on a study about correspondence between the WIDA English Language Proficiency Standards and the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and English Language Arts, the current study also touches on reviewer consistency in judging the cognitive complexity of the standards. Implications for recruiting reviewers and for targeting the desirable level of specificity in the standards are discussed.
