What is it about?

Nitric oxide (NO) plays an important role in wound healing. In this paper we show that topical application of NO from a hydrogel charged with a NO donor molecule, accelerates wound healing in an animal model of ischaemic wound.

Why is it important?

Chronic wounds associated with endogenous nitric oxide (NO) depletion are a major public health problem allover the world. The importance of our work relies on the demonstration that our NO releasing hydrogel is effective in accelerating the healing of ischaemic wounds, having thus potential for the topical treatment of chronic wounds.

Perspectives

Our results reinforce the importance of developing new biomaterials for topical nitric oxide (NO) release. Our efforts are concentrated on the development of new generations of biomaterials capable of providing the necessary stability and control of NO release rate for different biomedical applications.
