What is it about?

We removed cells from animal cartilage and tendon and turned what was left into a gel that retains a lot of the biochemical signals of the original tissues. When then we mixed adult stem cells with this gel, the cells responded to the signals and differentiated better into chondrocytes (cartilage cells).

Why is it important?

We can potentially use the gels derived from specific tissues like cartilage to enhance the regenerative potential of the patient's own stem cells to repair a local cartilage damage.

Perspectives

This approach could lead to a very straightforward way to improve tissue regeneration, especially musculoskeletal tissues, and this could represent a major benefit for patients.
