What is it about?
PISA 2006 focussed on science as its major domain. Science items were presented in a variety of contexts to increase relevancy and interest. This editorial presents the personal, social, and global contexts used to guide the choice of science items related to health, natural resources, the environment, hazards, and the frontiers of science and technology.

This is important because the structure of the PISA 2006 science domaine is clarified. It provides information for those who interpret the PISA results and also interesting novel ways of assessing scientific competencies, understandings and attitudes.
Perspectives
This publication, along with the others in this issue, clarifies PISA 2006 for a variety of audiences and helps guide the development of education policies and teaching that will increase world-wide scientific literacy.
