What is it about?

We have engineered human embryonic stem cells with limit lifespan by inactivate the expression of telomerase. Such embryonic stem cells are still pluripotent. However, the teratoma formation incidence of telomerase-null embryonic stem cells is dramatically reduced in vivo. Similar strategy can be applied to iPS cells as well.

Why is it important?

Our studies provide a new strategy to dramatically improve the safety of stem cell therapy by inhibiting tumor formation.

Perspectives

Our new method can greatly improve the safety of stem cell therapy. With the genetic engineering tools that become widely available and accepted, we foresee the implementation of our technique in the clinic applications in the near future.
