What is it about?

This is description of the isolation, properties and structure of starch from its alternative source – common cattail. This plant is known primarily as a food for survival practitioners.

Why is it important?

Both molecular and supermolecular structure of common cattail was described very thoroughly. Especially important are data regarding molecular mass distribution and degree of branching examined using size exclusion chromatography with triple detection.

Perspectives

Size exclusion chromatography with triple detection is an excellent tool for detail examination of molecular structure of macromolecules. Due to strong correlation between molecular structure and applicability of starch this technique undoubtedly will gain importance in the research of this biopolymer.
