What is it about?

This is the abstract of an oral presentation given at the Annual International Conference of the Australasian Sonographers Association in Melbourne, Australia (May 2016). The presentation reviewed the criteria used to diagnose an inflamed appendix in children with ultrasound, and explained some interim data collected during a study at a children's hospital in Brisbane to see how accurate appendix scans were in the past.

Why is it important?

This was an opportunity to remind sonographers, the health professionals that do the ultrasound scans in Australia and New Zealand, about the various things to look for when trying to diagnose a normal or abnormal appendix with ultrasound in children. By building awareness, we hoped to increase the confidence and ability of sonographers to be more accurate, particularly when they may not scan many children.
