What is it about?
We have followed the changes in mechanical strain patterns on a microscopic scale in a metal bar as it was stressed by bending. The regions with highest strain occurred adjacent to areas in the crystal structure of the bar where some disorder was found. Thus the strain distribution could not be generalized because of such disorders.

Why is it important?
If changes in strains distribution can be measured in this way,it should be possible to test the response of strains in complex metal components to stresses applied in different directions. Depending upon prior treatment of the component, strains may become localized to the extent that a failure of the material results.
Perspectives
This is the first demonstration of how the strains in a complex metallic structure respond to a sequence of applied stresses and annealing.
