What is it about?

The term "green tourism" is often used in conjunction with the desire for a balanced approach to tourism planning. "Green tourism" is defined as tourism that enhances the local cultural elements, operating under the control of local communities, providing employment and maintains the economic benefits within the local communities. In fact, many times the above definition poorly attested, since there are times when the economic benefits escape from local communities. From its part the tourist industry uses the term "green tourism" as a message to tourists on energy saving, avoid coastal pollution etc. Sometimes the same tourist businesses are accused of using the term or labeling "green" primarily for marketing purposes. This paper shows that governments have a crucial role regarding the encouragement of using cleaner technologies in tourism sector and presenting different approaches in order that a sustainable way could be achieved in developing countries.

Why is it important?

This study contributes a new perspective about the ongoing debate concerning sustainable tourism. The focus of this review is mainly on the definition of sustainable tourism and how tourism can be developed in a sustainable way. Sustainability has three strands: economic, social and environmental and every destination depends on all of them. It is important to anticipate and manage the negative social, cultural, environmental and economic problems arising from tourism. Sustainable development requires cooperation of all the economic activities in order to enhance the quality of life to local communities and natural environment.

Perspectives

Tourism is one of the most important industries for the world economy. Facts demonstrate that it can also bring benefits in terms of environmental protection and socio-cultural conservation. Its share in the world’s progress is so fundamental that any efforts to reach sustainable development globally or locally are doomed to fail without considering tourism’s implication and ensuring that tourism activities are fully integrated within sustainable development policies and procedures.
