Why is it important?

Exercise programs should be included in the comprehensive pulmonary rehabilitation program. It is important for rehabilitation nurses to promote walking exercises. Pedometers play a key role in motivating patients to do walking exercises. Telephone counseling provided during the exercise program is effective in the process of behavior change. Low intensity and supervised exercise programs increase exercise tolerance while reducing severity of dyspnea and fatigue.

Perspectives

Considering the physiological and psychological benefits of exercise, such as increased physical capacity in daily activities, improved quality of sleep and quality of life, increased ability to cope with anxiety and depression, exercise training appears to be a vital component of treatment in COPD. Nurses dealing with COPD patients should accurately assess the level of fatigue and provide the necessary information about the content and benefits of the exercise program to ensure the patient’s compliance and longterm maintenance of the exercise training.
