What is it about?

Artichoke leaf extract (ALE) has shown favorable effects on lipid profile and glucose level. Metabolic syndrome is a constellation of cardiometabolic abnormalities associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes. Metabolic syndrome results from an interplay of environmental factors and genetic factors. Thus, we investigated the effects of ALE supplementation on metabolic parameters in women with metabolic syndrome, using a nutrigenetics approach.

Why is it important?

We found for the first time that ALE supplementation may improve serum triglyceride level in A allele genotype of FTO‐rs9939609 polymorphism in women with metabolic syndome.

Perspectives

These findings highlight the need for further long‐term randomized clinical trials in a larger sample size to identify which group of patients with metabolic syndrome may particularly benefit from ALE supplementation.
