What is it about?

Plant derived drugs are being used in improving human health in India and abroad. Quality is an important attribute for determining the safety of drugs. The quality of marketed herbs/herbal formulations can be controlled by comparing them with herbal drug standards for acquiring optimum therapeutic benefit as well as for expanding global outreach. Indian pharmacopoeia Commission apart from setting the standards of modern medicines is also involved in setting the standards of herbs and herbal products. It provides the Reference Standards-botanical reference substances and the phytochemical reference substances to the stake holders. The article provides an overview of the history and the status of herbal drug standards in the current and forthcoming issues of Indian Pharmacopoeia.
